Why 'Angus'? Named for the British horticulturist who championed Eucalyptus trees in the South in 2001. The first and still one of the most popular in the Southern Eucs series.
Hardiness ‘Angus’ will thrive in zone 7B and further south. Growth from the base of the tree, following a harsh winter, can reach 12feet in a single season.
Getting Started This Southern Euc is quick to establish and is very tolerant of heat and drought. Offer it protection from harsh winds. Its soft willow-like foliage and triangular form make it a real head turner.
Size All grown up Angus could reach 40 feet tall. That said, the tree can be pruned to keep a desirable size or to encourage foliage growth.
Leaf Willow-like leaves with hints of red, dangle from burgundy stems. Leaves have a strong, fresh peppermint scent, and are a stand out in any arrangement.
Trunk & Bark Trunk is straight with elegant with weeping branches. Bark is fibrous brown with burnt orange to russet highlights.
Flower White flowers in clusters of seven.
Exposure Full sun
Soil Type All types. A good choice for dry soils.
Container Plant? Willow-like foliage and strong peppermint fragrance make it a great choice for a deck, porch, or patio.
What we learned in Southern Euc Trials In McDonough, GA Trials (zone 8A), eight 'Angusus' have reached 50 feet in ten years. At 6° F on Jan 7, 2014, we did see defoliation on the upper half of large, exposed trees however new leaves emerged in spring. In Western, NC (zone 6B), 10 month old Eucalyptus trees that froze to the ground at minus 10° F are growing from the base.
