Hardiness Very hardy. In your landscape ‘Jersey Girl’ will thrive in zone 8A and above. Extended trials, in colder regions, are showing even more cold tolerance.
Getting Started This Southern Euc is an attractive juvenile tree with a rapid growth rate. Grow it for its small, heart-shaped foliage and fibrous bark.
Size It has a lignotuber and can be coppiced to the ground to control size. All grown up this tree could reach 60’.
Leaf Soft green, and heart-shaped.
Trunk & Bark Trunk is straight and established crown is similar to an Oak. Bark is grey – brown, thick and fibrous and persistent on the trunk and larger branches. Above the bark is smooth and sheds in short ribbons.
Flower Tiny fruit pods are preceded by attractive, star shaped flowers.
Exposure Full sun to part shade.
Soil Type Handles all types of soil, even fertile soils, which is rare for Eucs.
Container Plant? Size and interesting bark make it a good choice for a large container garden.
What we learned in Southern Euc Trials In McDonough, GA (zone 8a) five-year old trees have had no damage after being planted from small 4” containers. All five of the ‘Jersey Girls’ are over 12’ tall and thriving.
